Will a copy of the receipt be enough to make a warranty claim? I contacted the Department of Fair Trading (NSW) and they told me that a ‘copy’ of the receipt is more than adequate. They went on to say that the receipt copy provides adequate ‘proof of purchase’ to make warranty claims and you should also ask if they have any ‘special’ conditions. Of course the copy needs to be readable and complete. You can also reasonably expect that the reference number on that receipt can be used to locate the purchase on their records if there are any doubts.
There’s a quick and easy way to learn about your Rights and Responsibilities at the Department of Fair Trading website. This website is an excellent resource and we recommend that your take a look as its quite empowering to know. I read there that you should always keep a copy of the receipts, dockets, invoices or contracts in a safe place as you may need them if you want to return, repair or exchange your the goods.
